We watched the Province allow individual Homes to restrict family members/POA's from caring for residents (beginning April 2020) while Care Home management hired inexperienced,minimally "trained" and HIGH RISK staff, while the LOWEST risk, most capable (and FREE) caregivers - family - were locked out of the residences - and OVER 5,000 DIED.
Just another reason Ontario nursing homes had the HIGHEST rates of COVID-19 related nursing home deaths IN THE WORLD !
Then came the rushed public hearings on Bill 37 (blink and you missed your opportunity to contribute). Then,the 85 recommendations made by the Long-term Care Commission -virtually ignored.
Do we see an obvious pattern here ?
If you needed any more "in your face" evidence the Province,not just the individual Homes, is incapable of protecting our most vulnerable - this was it.
As others have said, a banana republic can do better.
(Yes,there are many staff who are caring and capable,but also too many who are inept and abusive -and it starts with management.)
Witnessed,or experienced, neglect, abuse, or worse,(by staff, or management) in an Ontario Long Term Care home ?
Expose it.
Warn others of the abuse that occurs in the Care Home your loved one resides (or did),before they encounter the same.
The information you share here will assist families/POA's in protecting their loved ones, and themselves.
Resident,family member/PAO,friend,or staff ?
Send your story (anonymously if preferred), and expose those -at all levels- who need to be held accountable for their abuse and neglect.
